I feel compelled to add my useless opinion to the Firebird naming controversy. It's a 3-part deal:
I fully agree with all of your points. Probably, "Firebird-as-component's-internal-name" approach would allow to reach a reasonable compromise - I wonder if somebody of the project leaders is thinking in this direction.

Another thought is that Phoenix is essentially getting called Firebird. People have heavily latched onto the name Phoenix. If the new name gets the same level of mindshare, then people will only refer to it as Firebird. Firebird Db ends up on third page of google. Sucks to be them.... :(
