New XPToolkit Docs Coming OnlineTuesday May 11th, 1999The XPToolkit team has been working hard to document all of the features of the new UI, and that work has begun showing up here. The new docs include how to set various items in the chrome, what is not working, and what is going to change in the future. If you are working on your own custom UI, be sure to check this out, as it will not only explain what tags to use for each area of the UI, but also how each of the tags works and interacts with the rest of the client. Is the wrapper for Mozilla going to be a XUL interface? If so, how will it's performance be relative to a platform specific UI wrapper? What I'm getting at here is that it doesn't seem to make sense to develop a 'small' browsing component who's interface requires a 'high-end' system. Don't mean to sound critical, from my own experience I've observed that customizable 'skins' come at a great price... performance. xul describes the user interface the UI is rendered by the layout engine app services are acessed by javascript when mozilla is finished the UI will probably render almost as quick as a scripted web page pete Almost as quick as a scripted web page? I read that as: Yes, it will be slow compared to a platform specific UI. Does anybody, by chance, know the approximate percentage of developers working on Mozilla who are from the Unix camp? Why don't you just Download M5 for yourself and see the speed? I already have! :-o i'm a freBSD user pete jump on the mozilla unix mailing list it seems pretty even between mac windows and unix sorry: freeBSD not freBSD hmmm i did a time check i'm running mozilla on freeBSD 3.1 release w/350 processor using enlightenment wm it took 25 secs for mozilla to launch it took netscape 4.5 27 secs to start this is a pretty good sign since mozilla is an alpha piece of software pete I'm running a ROM modified Win98 and Netscape 4.08 took about 6 seconds to load on my P200! :) yea 4.x runs like a dog on unix i think netscape gives windows releases more attention because of the windows market and when you are poting to so many platforms it is extremely hard to run super effecient everywhere example: my pentium 75 machine at home with win 95 opens faster than my unix machine here at work my GNU tools run like a dog on winnt porting software aint easy hey M figures if they rule the world then they don't have to wory about porting this will change :-) ROM as in Revenge of Mozilla btw I'm downloading navigatorx right now To arielb: Cool... Hope you like it. I'm not sure when you made the above post... I updated the NavX this morning: http://www.silverlink.net/~jensenba/ The location bar is fully functional now... plus, a few menu items have been enabled, etc... OLEVariant: This sounds really cool - how about a screenshot? Simeon: I just revamped the ROM/NavX site... there is a little screenshot of NavX in the NavX Info section. http://www.silverlink.net/~jensenba/ More to come... ;-) |
