New User Conversion Site Online

Friday August 6th, 2004

Christoph Studer writes: "Today, zillivisation, a new community website, has gone online. Convert your relatives, friends, and co-workers to use Mozilla products and get finally rewarded for it! zillivisation wants to encourage you as an advanced user to spread Mozilla products into your circle of friends. Every reported conversion earns you some points, which improve your ranking. Show the world that you're a real Mozilla supporter and get into the top five!"

#1 And the point of this...?

I've converted quite literally hundreds of users in the past (who're all busy making new converts themselves, who ...) It's nice to mention in a vaguely bragging way in #bs every so often, but seriously, go and register on a website for this? "Rankings"??

"Oh yeah? Well, _I_ was already converting people to Mozilla when god was still deciding if it should be the big bang or the big kaboom!"

i agree. this is a rather worthless/pointless site outside of making some kids e-penis bigger when he feels the need to brag about something.

i can see it now: kid: "omg im so leet.. why my stats show i converted 6000 people just last week" long time moz user: "so.. rankings dont mean anything. in all the years ive used mozilla, ive converted many people over to it and desired nothing in return aside from the satisfaction that ones gets for helping another. dont you feel the same way?" kid: "*rolls eyes* whatever n00b. you are nothing unless you are the top 5"

I've created this website with some irony in mind. I, for myself, have not more than 4 conversions reported (maybe I've converted more, but can't remember anymore). And I've always followed the Mozilla development very close since Milestone 10.

I do not think that people weight their ranking that much, there are many reporters with only 2 or 3 conversions reported! Also the type of conversions and comments are not script-kiddie-typical, so I assume that most of the reporters are "normal users" ;)

It's also interesting to see what kind of people get converted, which products they use now and how contented they are!

From your MozillaZine profile: "Promotion of the products mostly, there is always an IE user that needs converting ;)"

I'd be pleased to see your reportings on the page, too!

Thanks for the feedback! chstuder

#4 Conversion Kit?

by Galik

Sunday August 8th, 2004 11:32 AM

Maybe someone could come up with some kind of (reversable) conversion kit. It could do this:

1) Downloads and installs Mozilla. 2) Gives it the "Internet Explorer" theme as default (easy transition) 3) Modifies the IE shortsuts on the Start menu, shortcut bar and desktop to launch mozilla instead of IE (but keeping the original icon). 4) Adds a new shortcut that looks similar to the IE icon but more dangerous (warning symbol?) which points to the original IE (for emergency use only). 5) Optionally (with the users permission) registers the 'conversion' to a remote logging site.

#8 Marketing is marketing

If all the "omg im so l33t"-kids uses this site to enlarge their e-penises the Mozilla community will get a lot of easy, free marketing.

Keep smiling ;)

#9 Grammar?

I guess being from Tuvalu, English is not the first language of the website author? Perhaps nvu needs the ability to incorporate a grammar checker as well as a spell checker!

"Take them away Internet Explorer and Outlook Express (evil)" "You'll have to learn them by heart because the victims (although technically untalented) often resist astoundingly long and clever."

It's a good idea I guess though. Anything to encourage people to get the word out. Just remember when converting people that this is beta software. Let them know there may be problems!
