Third Alpha Milestone Added to Mozilla 1.8 Cycle

Tuesday August 3rd, 2004

Asa Dotzler has announced that there will be a third Mozilla 1.8 alpha milestone before the beta phase starts. This change is intended to prevent the final 1.8 release from clashing with the launches of Mozilla Firefox 1.0 and Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0. The updated Mozilla Development Roadmap targets Mozilla 1.8 Alpha 3 for a Friday 13th August release. As a result, the beta milestone and the creation of a 1.8 branch have both been moved out a further six weeks.

Mozilla 1.8 Alpha 2 on Windows XP started up fine, and faster than Mozilla 1.7.x, but all I saw was a plain white page. I tried restarting several times and the best result, one time only, was a half downloaded page with missing CSS styles. So, Mozilla 1.8 Alpha is a big no from me. I don't know if other Windows XP users have experienced the same.

Off-topic: How do I uninstall XPI plug-ins? This is the only annoying missing/non-intuitive feature in Mozilla. Other than that I hope Mozilla 1.8 will continue to develop as rapid as previous versions. I've installed it on a friends PC and now my parents PC. No complaints yet :)
