Netscape 7.2 Release Within the First Two Weeks of August

Friday July 30th, 2004

eWeek have obtained confirmation from AOL that Netscape 7.2 will be released in early August. AOL spokesperson Andrew Weinstein told eWeek that the new version will be available within the first two weeks of August. Previous speculation has centered around an August 3rd release but Weinstein says that this date is just the deadline for placing early CD orders. He also confirmed that Netscape 7.2 will be based on Mozilla 1.7 with "not a lot of additive features". However, eWeek mentions the possible inclusion of the Netscape Toolbar, which is currently only available for Internet Explorer. A screenshot from former Netscape employee Pascal Chevrel seems to confirm this.

Correction: Pascal Chevrel was never employed by Netscape. Oops.

I care too. Every time NS gets released, I can continue politely notifying webmasters that their site doesn't work in the latest version of Netscape, which was just released. Netscape at least still carries a bit of weight, compared to Mozilla which carries almost none. Note, this is changing fast in FireFox's favor, but will still be true for a while.
