Netscape 7.2 Release Within the First Two Weeks of August
Friday July 30th, 2004
eWeek have obtained confirmation from AOL that Netscape 7.2 will be released in early August. AOL spokesperson Andrew Weinstein told eWeek that the new version will be available within the first two weeks of August. Previous speculation has centered around an August 3rd release but Weinstein says that this date is just the deadline for placing early CD orders. He also confirmed that Netscape 7.2 will be based on Mozilla 1.7 with "not a lot of additive features". However, eWeek mentions the possible inclusion of the Netscape Toolbar, which is currently only available for Internet Explorer. A screenshot from former Netscape employee Pascal Chevrel seems to confirm this.
Correction: Pascal Chevrel was never employed by Netscape. Oops.
i sincerely hope that this new netscape launch will not end up overshadowing the firefox 1.0 launch or end up confusing end-users and distracting them away from the better product. i think the netscape brand name was fatally tarnished by the flaws and delay with the 6.0 release, and many people will lump firefox with netscape and ignore the whole lot.
not to mention, it irks me that aol is managing to cash in on mozilla and netscape after all but dumping the whole thing.
