M4 Final Candidates Started; Release Possible Thursday

Tuesday April 13th, 1999

The final bugs have been squashed or moved off of the M4 bug list, and M4 final candidate building has begun. An M4 release may appear Thursday.

M5 work has already started: 74 M5 bugs have been taken care of, and new features are currently being rolled in.

Wasn't M4 originally supposed to come out like April 6th? Then it got pushed back to Friday or something, then Monday... What's the hold up?

As I understand it, work on M4 finished on April 6th; that's when the tree closed for features and stuff. They're trying to get the best build from that code now. I could be wrong about this; anyone more knowledgeable care to answer?

Being a software developer, I can tell you how release happens in large organizations. A date is picked feature freeze, then debugging work is done, then release. I guess, Mozilla is debugging at the moment. Some companies also have a UI freeze.

Although M4 release is not available (prolly held up from QA and testing), M5 work has already begun, so it's not as behind as you may think.

In the Win32 nightly binaries, the apprunner has been at M4 level for a couple of days.

It must be a buggy version of it.

If you look at the M3 target date and then at the when M3 was available the same thing happen. Except it only took dyas to get a good build.

Let them kill those bugs, so I can start using instead of NS and Outlook.

I don't care if they delay to next week: I think we all want something useable.

Hmm.. if the program is at least good enought to navagate around websites i can start using as my primary and start looking for bugs. All i do at work is surf the web and talk on the phones.

Honestly after trying the recent builds I would say that the M3 build is probably going to be more stable than the M4 build. One tip if you want to use the M4 build don't visit news.com or download.com, it could crash your machine.

No, news.com did not crash my machine, I was even able to change websites. But news.com did turn all black. didn't try download.com.

'Sides, the new nightly builds have not much at all to do with M4. They are M5 work. M4 stopped adding functions on 6th and has been in debugging ever since. It should be (theoretically) just as stable, if not moreso, than M3.

M4 seems great so far. Much more stable than M3 or the nightly builds. The Stop button even works!
