Netscape/AOL Layoffs Occur: 850 Jobs LostWednesday March 31st, 1999Well, folks, the news is in. The layoffs have occurred; Netscape and AOL each lost 425 employees. Click here for an article at the San Jose Mercury News. MozillaZine would like to say to all of those we know who were laid off that we'll miss them, and we wish them well in their futures. Thanks for all your selfless help and work. Were any of those 425 developers? -Chris One of the articles said that it was only accounting types who would duplicate the effort done by the AOL admin people. According to my story (which you could have read four hours before the Merc story was posted ;-) there were no engineers or developers cut. (http://www.news.com/News/Item/0,4,34500,00.html) Sorry to be off topic, but I'm working on a story about Mozilla looking toward year 2. If you have comments/perspective you want to share before noon (ASAP actually) today (Thursday), drop me some email at paulf@cnet.com. Well, this is not quite true. There was at least one engineer-type cut that I know of. OK--please let me know more. AOL told me otherwise--would like to get this ironed out with them. I just read on c|net that Jamie Zawinski quit. Anyone noticed? mozilla.org server seems to be down. I hope that is just an april fool's joke... A sad day for Netscape/Mozilla followers. Gee. That would be wise. Lay off QA. Listen, if you have a problem with the browser, submit a bug. But don't wish anyone laid off. #14 Re:Netscape/AOL Layoffs Occur: 850 Jobs Lostby Laid off Nscp employee (eng) Saturday April 3rd, 1999 9:56 AM There were cuts in engineering at several departments - that includes Netcenter, Server and Client division. Engineering cuts affected QA, core and other engineering disciplines. AOL downplays this because: 1) It is true that engineering cuts were less significant than others. 2) For AOL it is favorable news to say there were no layoffs in engineering. But there were, oh yes. Off hand I know about 6 friends of mine who were hit, all of them engineers.
