Yes and No. While students have contributed to a lot opensource projects there can be some problems. Its not uncommon for students to just drop projects when they get busy or gradute etc. Also there is a differnence between doing just enough to get a good grade on a project that happens to relate to an OSS project and doing work that is good and actually useful. Considering the great work that some students have done for OSS overall I'm definitely for getting more of them involoved, but I just wanted to point out that there can be some downfalls.
