Mozilla Thunderbird 0.4 Release Candidate 1Wednesday December 3rd, 2003The first release candidate of Mozilla Thunderbird 0.4 is now available. As well as builds for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X, extensions for offline functionality and Palm address book synchronisation have also been released. Read Scott MacGregor's forum posting about 0.4 RC1 for more information. It is hoped that the final version of Mozilla Thunderbird 0.4 will be released simultaneously with Mozilla 1.6 Beta. Last time I tried Palm syncing with Mozilla (not Thunderbird) was about a year ago, and it hosed up my Palm data. Has anyone tried this new module? Are there any docs or known bugs for this thing, the link just goes to the install file... Check out this topic for some people's experiences with it (including my own): http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=34461 I hear ya. I am deffinately waiting until that extension gets to beta. Even with my palm data backed up my palm is too important to me to mess around with it. Yeah, this would be the biggest reason for me to use Thunderbird and at the same time the biggest risk. I almost lost everything last time. I was lucky enough to have a second palm device all sync'd up. The newsest Palms - I just bought a Tungsten T3 - have a new address app called "contacts". Although clearly an updated version of the previous address software, it must be using a new conduit because Mozilla just doesnt seem to work at all with it. Pity as I would prefer to have a single set of contacts I confirm that problem. I had Mozilla 1.3 syncing nicely with my Palm III Address Book, but then broke it and wound up getting a new Palm Tungsten E (Palm OS v5.2.1), where the old Palm 'Address Book' has been replaced with 'Contacts'. I downloaded and installed Mozilla 1.5 and even went through the registry updating gyrations, to no avail. Haven't tried Thunderbird but I'd bet it won't work either. Your note here is the only place on the internet where I've been able to find even a mention of this problem. I confirm that problem. Initially had some trouble installing, until I followed the directions at http://www.thecapras.org/mcapra/ThunderbirdSync.html to do it manually instead of using the installer package. Got everything to complete, checked registry values, confirmed conduit present and even saw Mozilla AB sync pop up in the Hotsync window. But no addresses in Thunderbird. :( Thanks to that like I got at least something working, but it's not working right. While I do see the Mozilla AB sync pop up I see no synchronization going on. Changes to my Thunderbird addressbook are not reflected on my Palm (M130) nor are changes on my Palm updating my TBird addressbook. In fact in the Palm Desktop application I deleted all of the addresses there and synced but neither the Palm itself nor TBird's addressbook changed. Has anybody gotten this actually working? Also, I have several Addressbooks in TBird. Which Addressbook syncs? Hmmm, there goes my plan of syncing with my Treo 600. I feel like I'm 90% converged and this would be the last mile. E-mail addresses in my phone/pda and computer synced up, as well as phone numbers on my computer address book and phone - what fun! http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=38549 or directly here: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/nightly/2003-12-04-0.4/ I have not read any recent info about when Fb or Tb would replace the browser and mail funcions in the Suite. AFAIK, 1.6B will still be the same old suite with legacy built-in. The only reason I can think of to try to start synchronizing Suite with Tb or Fb development milestones would be - to prepare for or to start the awaited inclusion of one or both of those into a new version of the suite. Not affiliated or an expert or anything, but my inderstanding is this: Basically the hint is in the 0.4. AFAICT thunderbird is not yet ready to be integrated. When it's done, then you'll see it migrate to the main body of the browser, although I think someone said that people will probably keep the "old" suite going |
