Mozilla Firebird 0.7 and Mozilla Thunderbird 0.3 Release Candidates
Sunday September 28th, 2003
alanjstr wrote in to tell us that release candidate builds of Mozilla Firebird 0.7 are now available. Builds can be downloaded for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X from ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firebird/nightly/latest-0.7. The code for Firebird 0.7 will come from the Mozilla 1.5 branch, rather than the trunk.
Firebird is not the only Mozilla standalone application to be nearing a milestone release: Mozilla Thunderbird 0.3 is now up to its second release candidate with builds available from ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/nightly/2003-09-24-1.5. Like Firebird, Thunderbird 0.3 will come from the 1.5 branch, with developers hoping for a simultaneous release of Mozilla 1.5 and Thunderbird 0.3.

I don't think copying third party files around on users system's without warning would be a good idea, and there's no way to "link" on Windows (well, there are shortcuts, but that wouldn't help here). There's also no Firebird installer, so anything like that would need to be done on starting the browser.
Having checked, looks like there may not be a way of disabling looking at .mozilla/plugins - the instructions for other pluging scanning are at <http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/notes.html#Scanning>
But I agree that this should be handled better. I'm just not sure how, without an installer and a significant amount of work. The stuff that happens now seems better than nothing to me.
