MozillaZine Fifth Anniversary PollTuesday September 2nd, 2003Yesterday MozillaZine celebrated its fifth birthday and it seems like almost five years since we last updated our poll. That poll was put up shortly after the tenth anniversary of NCSA Mosaic (that was back in April) and we asked you during in which period you felt browser innovation was at its height. 3,613 people voted, with 10% choosing 1993-1994, 22% going for 1995-1996, 22% selecting 1997-1998, a mere 7% saying 1999-2000, 13% nominating 2001-2002 and 23% think that the the period of greatest browser innovation was from 2003 to now. Our next poll is, as you might expect, related to MozillaZine's fifth anniversary. We want you to tell us what your main reason for visiting the site is. Maybe you want to keep on top of Mozilla releases or other project developments. Perhaps you like the information about third-party projects (such as those discussed in the Independent Status Reports) or other less mainstream aspects of Mozilla development. You might visit to get links to media articles about Mozilla or other Mozilla-related pages, such as tutorials or developer information. It could well be the Mozilla discussions (the Talkback pages for each article and the MozillaZine Forums) that grab you. Maybe you like keeping up with the Mozilla developer weblogs. There's probably several reasons why you visit MozillaZine but tell us the main one. And yes, we know that the poll results pages haven't been updated to use the new Talkback code and look a little funny right now. We're working on it. so only 20% of people think that any part of Mozilla's history has been at the height of innovation (unless you count the first 4 months of 2003...) to me it looks like closer to 54%, mozilla was open sourced at the beggining of '98, so lets say 11% of the '97-'98 voters are voting for '98 ... 1997-1998 22% (799) 1999-2000 7% (278) 2001-2002 13% (501) 2003 Onwards 23% (854) ok, I'll accept the 1998 bit. But I don't see how you can take the 23% for "2003 onwards" as being the first few months of 2003. I can't imagine why anyone would think there was any significant innovation in that time. We're talking about the period between Firebird 0.5 and 0.6, or between Mozilla 1.3 and 1.4. No new IE versions in that time, and Opera progressed from version 7 beta to final. I'd have to think that pretty much all of that 23% were going for the "onwards" part, not the beginning of 2003. It's clear that the majority of people think the innovation happened 1993-97, or is yet to happen... |
