CNET News.com Interviews CEO of ManyOne Networks
Monday July 28th, 2003
CNET News.com has an interview with Joe Firmage, the CEO of ManyOne Networks, which aims to build a socially-responsible, advertising-free, 3D portal service. The ManyOne Universal Browser (currently in beta) is based on Mozilla and Firmage gives his thoughts on how AOL's recent actions will affect the project. CNET ran a video feature on ManyOne in March.

This thing has all the trappings of a dot com complete with new age religious web page and irrational expectations. The guy says he learned from the dot coms and has a crib sheet of all the best ideas, but he somehow missed the whole point. I thought we learned that the new economy really isn't. At least they might contribute cool stuff back to the project.

He does sound like a bit of a crackpot. "We've solved the bandwidth problem." Right, I'll believe that when I see it.
#2 "Universal Browser" is a bit of a misnomer...

Er, this "ManyOne Universal Browser" is a 100MB (!!) download and also not available on Linux. I don't think those two characteristics will make it very "universal" at all :-)

This is the dumbest thing I've heard in a long time.
I have much more faith in something like this growing organically like wikipedia. Let's not forget that Joe really hasn't done anything of note. USWeb was a catastrophe.
