Mozilla Thunderbird Gets New Contacts Sidebar Panel

Thursday June 26th, 2003

The mail composition window of Mozilla Thunderbird now has a Contacts Sidebar panel, which allows users to easily select the addresses to send their emails to. The feature is available in the new 2003-06-25 nightly of Thunderbird. More information about this build can be found in Scott MacGregor's announcement to the Thunderbird Builds forum.

I was waiting for this for a long time. Is this sidebar also available in main 3-pane window, below the folders list? Is this also available in normal Mozilla builds or only Thunderbird?

I am very appreciated with all these cool things being added to Mozilla mail/news or Thunderbird. As it is now a standalone product. It should compete with M$ Outlook Express directly. Therefore, I would suggest the development team should use OE as the target, and create a much much better alternatives.

There are still many area of improvement and they would make mozilla mail much better solution than OE. For instance 1. open speed faster 2. rec'd and send email faster ....

And we should also aware of development from other good email clients such as Kmail, Evolution etc.

For MailNews/Thunderbird to have same basic functionality as OE has had for ages:

http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30057 - Use one Local Mail tree for all POP3 accounts

http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=75866 - Viewing message for very short time shouldn't mark it as read

http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=43278 - Crossposts (same Message-ID) not marked as read in other groups

And as bonus: nasty crasher http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=206199 - Mail client crashes immediately on startup

seems like adding "features" such as "And as bonus: nasty crasher <http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=206199> - Mail client crashes immediately on startup" will make it pretty comperable to the industry leader and the public at large......

Hopefully it can be made as susceptible to virus's as oe, which should really give the public what they apparently want...

oh wait.. did i mention that it would have to cost something too???

(let me get my tongue out of my cheek now....)
