Mozilla Being Taught In ClassThursday January 9th, 2003Mike Potter wrote in to pass on a message from Paul Buhler, a professor at the College of Charleston in South Carolina, who is running a course on programming in XUL. The students will be working on projects for Mozilla Calendar. Paul writes: "This semester I am teaching a software engineering practicum course at the College of Charleston, in Charleston, SC USA. In this class the students work on projects of moderate complexity... as an experiment, that I have committed to for the Spring/Fall terms, this class will be using the Mozilla Calendar project as a base application to understand and modify. I am using the David Boswell, et al. text Creating Applications with Mozilla. At the moment, we will be looking at XUL/CSS/JS and in about a month we will be turning our attention to the Calendar project. I have been talking with Mike Potter at OEone and he has been an enthusiastic supporter of this idea. He is in the process of helping to identify some Calendar work that would be appropriate for this purpose." #1 Fix bugs for leaning-while-doing and extra creditby peterlairo Thursday January 9th, 2003 11:42 PM Maybe the students can get extra credit for fixing bugs. ;) Even better, fix open bugs as part of the course work to "learn while doing". That would be great. Here are some of my "favorite" Calendar Bugs: http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=116945 http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=137766 http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=137772 http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=137777 http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=139765 http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=155882 - if this isn't fixed BEFORE the course, I'll #§$%& http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=164599 http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=167669 http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=177279 - if this isn't fixed BEFORE the course, I'll #§$%& A friend of mine at western took a course where you worked in groups and had to pick a programming project at Western University (London, Ontario, Canada). Most of them were mozilla related and since I'm his friend and I knew a lot about mozilla he picked one of those. The full year course with 4 group members ended up with (essentially) 1 line of code by the end of the year and they got high 90's for completing the project. The 1 line of code was to find similar web pages (I told them that google had that functionality and that you just had to pass it the current url to it). It was a silly project. The teacher should have done more research on the problems that he was giving the students. It sounds like your friend cheated. Insted of developing the code himself, he merely linked to a place where the code existed - that was not the assignment. A pitty your friend missed an opportunity to learn more about mozilla. His teacher wasn't on the ball either for not catching it. Did he/she even bother to review the code? No? Fire the dimwhit! Any else notice that the OEone site is broken in Mozilla? The top is pushed way down the page. |
