Netscape's Smart Download Released

Wednesday November 18th, 1998

Joel Caris writes in to say, "Netscape SmartDownload has been released. This is the Netscape plugin that lets you pause and resume downloads."

Editor's Note: I downloaded it, and tried installing it with the browser (4.5) open and with the browser closed. I wasn't able to get SmartDownload to do anything... I went to Netcenter, tried downloading files from different areas, and got the same old download process dialog box. If anyone manages to get this to work, tell us what you did!

HTTP 1.1 has a Range: field which allows you to specify a portion of a file to download; that's HTTP's version of REGET.

Which reminds me... I was under the impression, when both 4.0 browsers were in beta, that both would fully support HTTP/1.1. It turned out that MSIE (almost) does, and Netscape didn't. Then I expected 4.5 to have it-- it doesn't. So... what's the holdup on HTTP/1.1?
