Netscape's Smart Download Released

Wednesday November 18th, 1998

Joel Caris writes in to say, "Netscape SmartDownload has been released. This is the Netscape plugin that lets you pause and resume downloads."

Editor's Note: I downloaded it, and tried installing it with the browser (4.5) open and with the browser closed. I wasn't able to get SmartDownload to do anything... I went to Netcenter, tried downloading files from different areas, and got the same old download process dialog box. If anyone manages to get this to work, tell us what you did!

Since it seems nobody bothered to look at their about:plugins page =) ... SmartDownload is only registered to handle items with the mime type application/idp & application/x-idp, both with the suffix of .idp. This is something called the "Internet Download Profile", which, in my best guess, is a list of mirror URL's, etc for the files. End result? Only sites that support Netscape SmartDownload are going to have IDP files, and thus... I'll stick to GetRight. =)
