Mozbot 2.4 Released

Tuesday April 2nd, 2002

Ian Hickson writes: "Mozbot 2.4 is out! Things to look for since the last release: The KookBot module ("Think about the tyranny, malignant and unjust, and how it compares with truthful rational approach."), an XML Logging Module (see the sample output), a Conversion module (for converting hex to decimal, Fahrenheit to Centigrade, and so on), and a Magic Eight Ball module.

There are also several other minor fixes that should make module development easier, and some new features in existing modules, like Tinderbox notifications using notices and the Greeting module being friendlier. Download the source tarball or read the instructions for updating mozbot using CVS and have fun!"

Can someone explain exactly what mozbot does, (I know it can do just about anything, but I mean what all can it do currently and how does it all work together). And most importantly is there any way this can run under windows?

What it can do is explained in http://www.mozilla.org/projects/mozbot/docs/ . This can't easily run under Windows dus to limitations in the Windows ports of Perl. But really, there's no real reason to use Windows these days.

Does you said it only for Mozbot; or was a message for all Ms Windows users?

Mozbot is an IRC bot, and it does what IRC bots do =) They op people, keep the channel open, and other things...

thanks, thats not immediently obvious when your read the discription, it just talks about all the interactive features, not that its an IRC bot, thanks. Of course, now reading the docs its quite obvious, though I think the mozbot people should make this clearer.

Well, I don't know.. If it's not already clear from the name "Mozbot" then the FAQ should offer you some clues:

What is mozbot?

Mozbot is an IRC bot. Originally designed specifically for the irc.mozilla.org community, it has grown into a multipurpose bot with many features. If you want to check it for yourself, connect to irc.mozilla.org or use the java IRC client, and speak to ssdbot (a mozbot instance run by Jake). A good place to start is ssdbot help.

Whenever Mozilla 1 is released, Opera is going to handle downloads better than Mozilla, Internet Explorer will render webpages better than Mozilla and Netscape 4.x will have more acceptance than Mozilla.

But it will be more accepted than Opera, it will render webpages better than Opera or Netscape 4, and it will handle downloads better than Internet Explorer or Netscape 4. No one has proposed that Mozilla is the best at *everything*.

I'm of the opinion that Moz page rendering is better than any other option, and of course the categories Tanyel chose are quite arbitrary. There are any number of other categories one could define where Mozilla excels most of its competitors. I also think that acceptance of Mozilla and other gecko-based technologies will shortly gain more acceptance at least than Netscape 4.x.

I made the post because I was bored with the Mozbot thing and disappointed with the decision to delay the download manager. The homepage changes so rarely that I found it more practical to bookmark the build bar forum rather than the homepage. Since the tabs are working, I would not have to keep using Opera if the download manager was finished.
