Mozilla and eBay Launch Firefox Companion for eBay Beta in France, Germany and the UK

Monday May 7th, 2007

Mozilla Europe has announced the release of the first beta of the Firefox Companion for eBay in France, Germany and the United Kingdom. The add-on for Firefox 2 offers a range of features to make it easier for users to participate in eBay auctions while browsing the Web.

The most visible feature of the Firefox Companion for eBay is the eBay Sidebar, which lets users monitor items that they are bidding on, selling or watching, with details updated in real time. eBay searches can also be performed from the sidebar. An alerts feature allows users to be notified when certain events occur, such as being outbid or an auction ending. These alerts can either be delivered as alert boxes or by highlighting the relevant item in the sidebar with a glow. Finally, the Account Guard feature warns users if they enter their eBay or PayPal passwords on a non-eBay or non-PayPal site.

There are separate download pages for the French version of the Firefox Companion for eBay, the German version of the Firefox Companion for eBay and the UK version of the Firefox Companion for eBay. Users with Firefox 2 will be offered just the extension, while users of other browsers and versions will be offered a localised edition of Firefox with the add-on pre-installed.

Tristan Nitot has a weblog post about the beta of the Firefox Companion for eBay with links to news coverage in English, French and German. Null Morpheme, a weblog dedicated to reviews of Firefox extensions, has a review of the Firefox Companion for eBay with screenshots.

The Mozilla Corporation announced a partnership with eBay International in March, though no further details were released at the time. The final release of the extension is scheduled for the second quarter of this year.
