Messenger Now Using Outliner

Monday March 19th, 2001

Tony Jordan writes in:
" The new mail/news branch landed and it's in today's builds. The new code uses the widget that landed the week before last. This should speed up the mail/news performance a lot. Part of the new cache will be landing soon as well (hopefully tomorrow) so keep an eye out for even more performance improvements."

The new outliner is amazing, and if you're using mail at all, you should grab a new build!

I think it missed the deadline for 0.8.1 inclusion.

#3 Coolioness

Only one thing to say : coolioness! I'd say it's about three times faster for me on a very low end computer. Displaying the first message still takes a long time for some reason, but once that's done, it is very much like Netscape 4. I can't wait to see the few bugs in there squashed, and a few images will do it. Thanks mailnews team! Fabian.

Fabian, if it's only the very first message that takes a long time to display try renaming your history.mab (I think thats the name, or maybe history.dat) file and see if that helps. Others who were experiencing a really long delay on the initial message had some corruption (or it had grown to an outrageous size) in a history file. Just in case it helps :)

Hmm yeah this sped it up a lot. Now I'm one happy mail user. :) Thanks Asa!

#4 Faster?

I tried out the March 19 branch, and it to me seemed way, way slower than before. Not even usable.

Guess I'll try the March 20 builds.

#9 Packaging problems.

I tried out the March 19th trunk build and it was butt slow - wouldn't even load a single message for over 10minutes. Apparently this was the result of a packaging problem, today's (March 20th) build is speedy! Joseph Elwell

What else could this Outliner widget be used for? I mean it's just a listbox, right? Any chances that other aspects of Mozilla may start using Outliner? Like the Chatzilla name display? What about the Cookie Manager? (that's in dire need of a speed increase)
