Newsgroup Renaming

Wednesday November 29th, 2000

Gervase Markham writes, "The current netscape.public.mozilla.* newsgroup hierarchy on news.mozilla.org (a.k.a. secnews.netscape.com) is going to be renamed to mozilla.*. This is for several reasons:

1) People get confused by the "netscape" in the newsgroup name into thinking that they can rant/complain/ask questions about Netscape 6 there

2) The current structure is flat, and something a bit more organised would be good

3) There are several old groups which need pruning, and several sections of the community have recently asked for new ones

"The full proposal, together with a mapping from the old to the new groups, can be found here and discussion of the proposal is taking place in news:netscape.public.mozilla.general. Please read the previous threads before commenting - a lot of issues have already been covered.

"Those who read the groups via the mailing lists will be automatically subscribed to the nearest matching group in the new hierarchy. Those who use newsreaders will have to do this manually, but messages will be posted to say when the new groups are operational.

"We hope to create the new groups this week."

It has bothered me for a long time that Mozilla had all its newsgroups under the netscape.* heirarchy... Mozilla is NOT Netscape and they should make that abundantly clear wherever possible. Having all the Mozilla newsgroups under netscape.* implies a strong Netscape influence on whats supposed to be an independent product.

It seems to me that the word *Netscape* should be stricken from Mozilla wherever possible. (newsgroups, filenames, class names, mozilla developer email addresses). As long people keep seeing *Netscape* everywhere they are going to get the impression that this is a Netscape dominated product... We should have the newsgroups on a mozilla.org domain, all the developers should have mozilla.org domain names, the source code should not reference Netscape...

Mozilla needs to distance itself from Netscape as much as possible to stress the independent nature of this project.

You should be aware that when I asked Netscape (IPlanet) about where to find information on and complain about their browser they actually pointed me to these Mozilla newsgroups. I am afraid that Netscape seem to be abusing their relationship with Mozilla to avoid supporting their product.
