Mozilla Has Branched for M17

Wednesday July 26th, 2000

Asa Dotzler writes, "The Plan: we branch this morning for M17 and nsbeta2 (PR2). M17 and nsbeta2 live together on the branch while we iron out the remaining 'plussed' bugs. The trunk gets renamed M18 and we start checking in bug fixes in carpools and individually. The trunk will probably become a little less stable (as is usually the case at a milestone or nsbeta) so if folks are looking for the stable builds they should get the branch M17 nightly builds. We don't have a date for M17/nsbeta2 yet. The plan is to relaease them at the same time but the timing is dependent on how swiftly we are rid of the remaining dogfood and nsbeta2+ bugs."

#1 M17 feature complete?

It is my understanding that M17 is supposed to be feature complete and only improvements will be added from here on out. Most of the focus will be fixing all outstanding bugs and improving speed.

Is this true?

I think Netscape have not been implementing features for a little while now, except where absolutely necessary.

Mozilla.org has not set a freeze, only Netscape for their employees, so there will still be some feature work.

#12 The Netscape UI?

Guys,

The Netscape PR1 was released with Mozilla UI which is very differnet from NS4.

Is Netscape working on a UI of its own? If yes when do they want to introduce it? PR2? PR3? or the final release?

I think Mozilla UI will be a big transition for most NS4 users. But there are always skins... However, most REGULAR users never bother with skins!

Also, how many varients of Mozilla (ie. NS6 etc) do we expect to see when it is released?

Thanx

Have you seen the latest Mozilla builds? They have a more "Netscape 4ish" skin included that should be much more comfortable to use.

Don't know if Netscape is working on a skin of their own.

PR-1 was released with the _netscape_ skin. Modern is the netscape skin. There is now a "Classic" skin included in the mozilla daily builds.

#3 Nice to see ...

It's good to see that the NS beta will coincide with a milestone this time. The situation was silly last time.

Yea well suppositivly the NSbeta2 additions have consitantly been worked on along with mozilla (just on a private server) so even today they could basically release beta2 based on the code that was available to download today, but they won't for obvious reasons of wanting to clean things up a bit more first.

#4 Dying to see it

I figure one more month, give or take a week or so?

One more month to M18, or one more month to PR2, or one more month to M17? If a full month to M17, that's a bit long . . .

#7 Slashdot: M18 is now available!

What's the betting that someone sees the M18 nightlies appearing and posts an article to slashdot saying that M18 has been released and will Slashdot fall for it the third time. It already happened for M16 and M17.

From what I've seen I can tell you M17 will be an impressive milestone.

M18 is available? ;-Þ

Heh! Can't wait for M18.

Could be kind of fun to see if Slashdot would take the bait three times in a row.

#21 Go ahead! NOT!

LOL! It would be funny! But given the amount of misconception about Mozilla already, I think it is better not to. Still its tempting...

#17 impressive M17

yes, I agree: M17 will be an impressive milestone. I post this message with Build M17-2000072904 (Win 32-Installer) and it is FAST, STABLE (no crashes since 3 or 4 hours) and SMALL (~ 6100 kB - no debug and test stuff)! Page rendering is much faster than IE 5.0 and, of course, NS 4.7 in my eyes!

#20 August 8 for M17/PR_2 - Makes this User Happy

The last M17 nightly before the branch is what I'm using now, and it's pretty much rock solid.

I have to agree. But I can't wait for M18 though. Mozilla needs to get leaner. Judging from the last status report, there are lots of places where caching is not working.
