Get Mozilla Themes at x.themes.org!

Tuesday July 25th, 2000

X.themes.org is now a host for Mozilla themes! If you're interested in getting your themes out to the masses, go check it out! They have been kind enough to take on the work now that the chromeZone is on hiatus. Thanks, guys!

#2 Proliferation of crap skins to follow?

And now that the themability of Mozilla is out in the open, are we going end up with large numbers of design nightmares created by users with no inkling of consistency and creativity?

Are we going to be inundated with huge archives of ugly, useless themes? Alas I wish there was away to avoid it. Finding quality skins amongst other products has been largely a needle-in-the-haystack search. So far we've been lucky that the Mozilla themes that we've seen so far have been very nicely designed (well, I'm not so sure about the Modern skin, but the rest are pretty nice ;).

Maybe it's good that it takes so much work to make a skin or package today. Maybe only the people qualified will take the time to do it.

But who am I kidding? The only people who have the necessary free time to do it are exactly the ones we don't want doing it. :)

Of course most Moz skins will be hideous, just like most winamp skins or X themes, but people will enjoy trying them and making them, and a few will be really good. Themes/skins aren't really meant to be serious ways to build beautiful interfaces, they are meant so that everyone can design their own browser even if it is as ugly as hell.

x.themes.org seems a weird choice to me.

Eventually we will have a 'mozilla.themes.org' (though the url does work now - as a redirect), at themes.org. We added the section to x.themes.org for now, because a) the community needed a place to store and obtain skins now since the chromeZone closed, and b) x.themes.org was the easiest section to integrate it into. We do have plans to create a seperate skins section at themes.org for things like xmms, mozilla and others but that's going to take some time because we want to make that part of our code rewrite so it's done right from the beginning. Please be patient, soon mozilla.themes.org won't redirect. :-)
