Post by AJUK »

OK you may know This argument about alt text being shown as a tooltip (With I'm against, I think we should have a pref) Now we can have a Poll <img src="http://images.deviantart.com/emoticons/icon_w00t.gif" title="Woot">

If someone really wants it, let them use the extension.

Most users would never realize they're missing it.

There's already a poll about this on the MozillaZine FUD forums.

Seems that too many people here are standards purists. Oh no, use two seperate tags for each image! Yes, that's the key to standards compliance!

... and specify a width and a height, what a waste, what for? A source should be enough.

You do realize that each tag servers a seperate purpose right? You don't even need the title tag if you don't want it.

Why is there so little acknowledgement that most people are *users* and *not* web designers?

Suppose I go to a web page. It's a gallery of artwork, say. By an amateur web designer. This amateur knows that the alt tag shows up as a tooltip in IE--and he probably doesn't know anything about Mozilla, if he's heard of it at all. So he uses the alt tag for information about each piece, that's designed to show up as a tooltip.

Mozilla doesn't show it. I can email the person, but maybe he'll change it and maybe he won't. Since he's not a Mozilla user, he probably won't.

I have no control over that whatsoever. I can do it right myself, and encourage others to do the same, but I can hardly force them to. And even if the functionality is wrong, having the *OPTION* to use that functionality would be a good thing. I am, therefore, all for having a preference.

I don't think the ability to show something the way it was intended, even if it's wrong, is necessarily a bad thing. To err is human, after all.

Feel free to implement one in your build... Just as a note about the problems involved in dealing with this sort of thing, this is a good example of how we ended up in the current tag soup world....

Well, hurrah for bookmarklets. Add the following as a bookmark (all one line) on your personal toolbar or bookmarks to convert all alt tags into titles (when images don't have titles):

<code>javascript:(function(){function altToTitle(d){for(var i=0;i<d.images.length;++i)if(d.images[i].title=="")d.images[i].title=d.images[i].alt;}altToTitle(document);for(var f=0;f<parent.frames.length;++f)altToTitle(parent.frames[f].document);})();</code>

I couldn't agree more. Maybe if the Mozilla community regarded users as customers, it would be better for the development of the browser.

Isn't that what Mozilla is really all about - giving people a choice (of browsers). Why then not give them more choices when using Mozilla?

While it is a good thing to aim for perfection, taking "shortcuts" that people take into account is a necessity.

<sarcasm>
Let's implement <marquee> while we're at it!
</sarcasm>

What's next, implementing IE's non-standards-mode broken CSS box model in Quirks mode?

Really, if a website requires the browser to display Alt text on tooltips to be usable, there is something terribly wrong with the website.

No, probably not, because MozTweak (as well as the quite similar Preferential) only let's you change already existing prefs. But you can install the Popup ALT Attributes extension by Piro alanstr was talking about.
