How do you define default browser for thunderbird
Is there a way to define the default browser to be opened upon a http:// link being pressed.
In latest nightly build in linux(5/5/2003) http:// link in a does nothing I've got firebird(naples) installed as well and I can't figure out how to get thunderbird to activate firebird or anyother browser.

How do you define default browser for thunderbird
Thanks for the quick reply-
although I fear that you've answered it in a windows context.
I don't have a default browser entry in my tools->options->general.
Thanks anyway - this may be a linux specific bug.

oh, on older builds (0.5 for example), it's named Tools > Preferences, not Tools > Options.. ;)

Re: How do you define default browser for thunderbird
It still does not exist in my linux build.
whether it's prefrences or options.
I found out the shortcut to execute the browser - a middle click on the link but then I get the next message:
Components:classes['@mozilla.org/appshell/component/browser/instance;1'] has no properties.
This sounds like my missing pref .
I'll try to play with it some more.

re:How do you define default browser for thunderbird
For anybody following this thread ...
The todo list has the next entry which from what I understand is the answer -
"We need a linux guru to implement nsIExternalProtocolService::loadUrl for linux. Without this, we don't load http urls (and other non mail urls) in the default browser like we should. I'm not sure what the OS integration hooks are for Linux to implement this routine. It problable depends on the desktop environment being used? (Bryner might have something for this for gnome)"
meaning ....
It doesn't do it yet.
Why is this a guru issue?
Why can't we just have a pref indicating what's our required browser and if there a linux wide default coming up it should simply modify the pref ...
How hard is it to exec firebird url?
I know I may be over simplifying but what am I missing here?

It's a little harder than that: since you can't [yet] run two instances of mozilla with the same profile, you can't just start up another process. You need to check and see if there's another instance already running. If there is, then use the "remote" commands (see http://www.mozilla.org/unix/remote.html).

How about this as an option:
To load browser (HTTP) links, use the following browser:
1. Default OS browser. (Currently : xxx)
2. Run this browser:
This would benefit those of us that run Mozilla on Windows but are too scared to make it the default browser (Afraid, that is, of Microsoft's wraith and that something may break in other programs that expect IE as their browser).
