Firefox & Thunderbird Garage:
The Definitive Guide to the New Web Browser and Email Applications That Are Taking the World by Storm

Mozilla Insiders Provide Helpful Tips for Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird Users on Everything from Security and Privacy Protection to Advanced Search and Spam Control

Upper Saddle River, N.J. — APRIL 14, 2005 — Prentice Hall Professional Technical Reference has published Firefox & Thunderbird Garage, the book that shows everyday computer users — whether newbies or seasoned professionals — how to make the most of Mozilla's trailblazing Web browser and email programs. Mozilla is the open source software project that develops and distributes the popular Mozilla Firefox and Mozilla Thunderbird applications.

The guide is co-authored by two Mozilla insiders instrumental in the creation of these applications: Chris Hofmann, who helped lead the worldwide release of Firefox 1.0 in November 2004, and Marcia Knous, a key member of the quality assurance testing team for both Firefox and Thunderbird. John Hedtke, the book's third co-author, is a well-known author and technical writer whose recent books include MP3 for Musicians and Robohelp for the Web.

Computer users are already convinced of the benefits of switching to Mozilla's products. More than forty million people have downloaded Firefox and five million have downloaded Thunderbird since the products debuted in late 2004.

The definitive and comprehensive book provides more than 350 pages — richly illustrated with screenshots and helpful commentary from Hofmann and Knous — about how to master these free Web applications. The book is the newest addition to the Garage Series from Prentice Hall Professional Technical Reference.

In his foreword to the book, Ben Goodger, lead engineer for the Firefox project, says that, "This book should give you a better understanding of what makes Firefox and Thunderbird tick, how to get the most out of them so that you get the most out of the Internet, and how to stay safe when you're online."

"During the 1.0 development phase, I wrote test cases for both the Firefox and Thunderbird products and performed basic functional tests, so I really got to know and appreciate all of the new features — and existing ones — inside and out," said Knous.

"Even though I had already been using Firefox and Thunderbird for several months before I started writing the book, there are a ton of things I learned from working with Chris and Marcia, tips and tricks I don't think I would have figured out. This is truly an insider's guide," Hedtke said.

Firefox & Thunderbird Garage is organized into 13 chapters, each of which discusses important aspects of the applications and how to customize and tweak them for personal use. The book concludes with six appendices covering keyboard and mouse shortcuts for both Firefox and Thunderbird, menu commands, using configuration files, and additional security options.

Firefox & Thunderbird Garage (ISBN 0-13-187004-1) also includes helpful screenshots and has an accompanying website:, which has available for download two of the book's chapters, Protecting Your Security and Privacy (Chapter 2), and Protecting Your Privacy and Blocking Spam (Chapter 11). The book will be available through major chain and independent booksellers worldwide and through online vendors at a suggested retail price of U.S. $24.99.

The Garage Series is a street-smart series of books about technology built on the premise that technical books don't have to be boring or be written in the impersonal voice of an all-powerful narrator. Other popular Garage Series titles include Web Design Garage by Marc Campbell, iPod & iTunes Garage by Kirk McElhearn, and Web Search Garage by Tara Calishain.
